What is gematria used for

gematria is a system of assigning numerical value to Hebrew words, based on the numerical equivalents of letters. It is most commonly used to interpret passages in the Hebrew Bible or religious texts and to gain insight into their meaning.

The practice of Gematria dates back to antiquity and has seen a resurgence in contemporary times due to its application in esoteric hermeneutics and its connection to Kabbalah. According to Jewish tradition, the Torah was initially composed of gematria values written with certain letters, although this is still a subject matter of debate today.

In the interpretation of the Hebrew Bible, Gematria has been used extensively by scholars throughout history to explain various relationships between words, including their relationship numerically. A similar Gematria system is also used for Aramaic and Greek passages in the Bible as well.

As an esoteric hermeneutic tool, Gematria can be used in a variety of ways:

• To find connections between seemingly unrelated passages that contain similar numbers;

• To associate verses with dates or words that share the same numerical value;

• To interpret hidden meanings behind names or other words based on their numerical value;

• To decode prophetic phrases or symbols associated with specific numbers;

• and even as part of divination rituals.

Aside from religious texts, gematria is also used in gemology—the study of gemstones—to assign numeric values to each stone based on their colors, shapes and other qualities. The numerical values are then examined for patterns that could potentially unlock hidden meanings about certain attributes that can be associated with each specific stone.
